THE LOMBARDY MANAGER WAS LIKE nobody Jane had ever before met. She was pretty old, and wearing what Jane’s Mom would call a “housecoat,” in quilted pink sateen, and with it, gold vinyl slippers which were backless, with two-inch heels, and actual fluffy white pompoms on the toes. She had a lot of surprising makeup on, too. A filterless cigarette – partly burned, but currently out – dangled from the corner of her mouth. Her gray hair was the most difficult to keep from staring at. As far as Jane could tell, the bouffant front was as solid as plastic, from an unimaginable number of coats of hair spray. It had that yellowed look that lacquer always had; on old paintings in museums. The back just didn’t bear close inspection at all.

But Mrs. Peach was genial, and impressed that Jane actually had a real, full-time, downtown job; and in a solid type of company, insurance. She said she thought Jane looked like a nice girl, could tell she wasn’t on drugs or booze, and was sure she wasn’t the type to be “partying” in her room. She could have visitors in the day, but not overnight. Ten was going-home time for anyone who wasn’t registered. Jane agreed with all this, and a bargain was struck. She paid for the room from Friday to secure it, but would move in on Saturday, the day after tomorrow. Although, it was good to know that she and Pan could even come and stay here tomorrow evening, if things got too weird at the house. She wondered if Pan would have to actually ride the bus with her, or whether he could just transport himself here directly. It would be interesting to find out.
